The Switch Up

The Switch Up

A few years ago I began competition cheer and I was so excited! In my mind, I imagined making friends with my teammates and having amazing bonds with my coaches, while also doing something I loved. That never actually happened. Most of the people were nice to me, but we never actually formed relationships. For some reason, I always felt different. There were very few black athletes at the gym and no black coaches or staff. Being the minority in your neighborhood, school, and on teams can take a toll of you. I just wanted to be around people who looked and felt like me. We would go to competition and see teams that were more diverse and I’d feel jealous that they had each other, and I had almost no one. I spoke to my parents about the possibility of a switch. That was the best choice I’ve ever made. My new gym has the diversity, support and positive attitude that I needed to feel welcomed and appreciated on my  team. It’s the perfect fit! The only regret I have is not making the switch sooner.
